The majority of our borrowers do a fabulous job of cleaning the Thing they've borrowed before they return it, but if our Thing Technicians think it would cause an unpleasant experience for the next borrower, we reserve the right to charge.
Returning the Thing clean is for the benefit of the next borrower
Our Thing Technicians have limited time to maintain the Things, so it is up to the borrower to clean Things for their return. We process cleaning fees when our Thing Technician reports something as unclean beyond the regular expected wear and tear.
We determine what the appropriate fee is to charge depending on the state of the Thing and how much time out of their regular maintenance sessions it took our Thing Technicians to clean. These fees are to prevent the next borrower having a bad experience.
Examples of when we may charge a cleaning fee:
- A Strimmer caked in grass
- A Carpet Cleaner with water left inside it, a dirty bucket, or blocked pipes due to not being flushed through after use
- Power tools covered in dust and/or mud
You agree to returning Things clean in our Terms of Borrowing
When you make a reservation with us, you agree to our Terms of Borrowing which outline what we expect from you as a borrower, and what you expect from us. We also have our "Three Golden Rules of Borrowing" as general guidelines.
As you can see in our Terms of Borrowing, you agree to:
- Bringing the item back clean. If the item is returned to Library of Things in a state that causes our Thing Technicians to perform a deep clean and/or an unpleasant experience for the next Member, we reserve the right to charge a Cleaning Fee determined by Library of Things. This Cleaning Fee is based on the time taken out of our Thing Technicians’ regular maintenance shifts for extraordinary deep cleans.
We provide information on how to clean Things in our Borrower Guides
Our Borrower Guides are available at the bottom of the Thing page on our website under "Useful links", or by scanning the QR code on the Thing's label. We also include a link to them in our reservation confirmation emails.
On our Borrower Guides, we include information about how best to clean the Thing before returning.
If you're having trouble getting something clean, it's always best to let us know, so we can help. This also means we won't assume you didn't try to clean a Thing before returning it!
